The Welsh Government has issued a Q3 2020 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales. The data to September 2020 shows 14,698 premises have now been completed.
The second contract consists of two stages, the original £22.5m deal (reflecting a target of 26,000 premises by March 2021) and a much more recent £30m extension (13,000 premises by June 2022). The reason why the extension is more expensive is because the cost of deployment rises disproportionately as you enter those increasingly remote and sparse communities.
According to the latest update to the end of September 2020 from the WG’s Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters, Openreach has so far built their full fibre network to a total of 14,698 premises (up from 9,895 in June 2020) under the contract – of these 3,311 are in the Lot 1 area, 5,018 in Lot 2 and 6,369 in Lot 3 – see below for more detail.
All of these completed premises are subject to further assurance by WG and, so far, 12,030 have been checked through this ongoing process. “We must again remember that the continued successful deployment of the project must be seen against the background of the current pandemic. Openreach has worked hard to maintain the delivery of the project,” said Lee to all members of the Senedd.
Admittedly more than 60,000 are still expected to remain unserved once the current contract ends. Some of that will probably be tackled by the WG’s voucher schemes and community fund, but others may have to wait for the UK Government’s £5bn investment in gigabit-capable broadband to have an impact (it’ll be late 2021 or early 2022 before we see contracts for that being awarded, assuming no delays).
Breakdown by local authority
It’s Postcode FTTP time here in RCT, who knows if Ferndale/Tylorstown will finally be given Full Fibre by next year?? Currently having to put up with a 1km flaky Aluminum “Faulty” line that BT nor OR will fix, so I’m keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed that we finally get the FTTP that each engineer we’ve had out keep telling us that it’s not far away!!
I would be happy with 80/20 but 20/7 is where we’re at for the moment in this part of Tylorstown.
I do take my hat off to OR for their hard work, especially how the Valleys of South Wales are, the views are amazing though!! Anyway, I do hope the WG and OR get here sooner, but patience is everything in this day and age….
It looks good for you. https://api.superfastmaps.co.uk/fibrecities/1.0/?city=Aberdare
Still no sign of deployment on my street in. I live in Mancot,Flintshire and it is supposed to be semi-rural(hard to reach)area. When I check on Gigabit voucher scheme website with my postcode, Openreach seems to be in the area working.. can’t claim vouchers, Mancot is classes as none rural for Department of digital culture media and sport. Checked with Openreach many times no current roll-out plans by Openreach, yet only 1 pole down the street had fibre. This makes no sense whatsoever. Exchange is in Hawarden 2km away 20-25 splitters for whole village equal amount of fibre pole connectors, done!! Yet the cost from Openreach is is like 500k.
Mancot does not appear to be in ORs first phase of FTTP. However with so much around you are very likely to be on a future phase (same exchanges). https://api.superfastmaps.co.uk/fibrecities/1.0/?city=Buckley
Peoples Fibre may have never reached you, will never know now.
Outdoor 4G only option for next two years.
Openreach is roll-out is so slow.It takes couple of days to update a pole to fibre. I don’t know if it is because a huge company so they have to pass details around a lot of people or if the permissions from council takes to long, either way it is slow as a snail. 4g is horrible here.. for 5G to be everywhere, Companies have to put 5g on every Openreach pole around the country. Where there is a pole there is internet line and there are people. It is too costly that’s why we are so many years behind now..
what are you on about about 5g on a pole
another fishing point trying to get a reaction
really
Lol what ?? Are you serious?? Since when you can decide what I can or what I can not say? That’s my idea how the 5g could be rolled out everywhere… are you one of those anti 5G guys? dude respect others!
hmmm

not very respectful is it
Hi, any idea when Buckley goes live ? CH7 seems to be taking forever. We are keeping things together with a copper cable that’s way beyond its use by date ! Please anyone, any ideas. We are 200 yards from Buckley town centre (aka Charity Shop Paradise). Thanks :). Stay safe, take care.
