One of the UK’s newest alternative broadband network providers, Spring Fibre, has quietly updated their website to name the first 3 locations – all in Lincolnshire – for their plan to build a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP network to cover 1 million premises in England.
Just to recap. Spring Fibre, which was initially backed by Kingsley Capital Partners and telecoms specialist Graphite Strategy, is known to have secured an investment of “up to” £155 million from R&M’s (River and Mercantile) Infrastructure business to support the initial rollout of their new wholesale network for other ISPs to harness (here).
However, last year’s funding announcement was extremely light on detail, and we haven’t had another update since then. But Joseph over at TelcoTitans recently spotted that the operator’s initial build had begun, and their website confirms that the first locations to benefit include the South West side of Lincoln city, as well as the small towns of Mablethorpe and Louth.
Both Lincoln and Louth already have extensive gigabit-capable broadband coverage from Virgin Media, while Openreach’s rival FTTP network is also a growing presence in both locations. On top of that, the Northern part of Lincoln is well covered by CityFibre and growing. Suffice so say that some competition does exist in these locations, but it’s not as aggressive as in other areas, while Mablethorpe has been largely overlooked.
By the looks of it, Spring Fibre’s build in Louth will initially focus on the northern half of the town, while their deployment in Mablethorpe is currently focused on the sea front areas. But other than that, we don’t know much about their rollout plan and timescale for these locations, although it does look as if they intend to achieve a high level of coverage. Nor are there any details on which ISPs will supply the service or how much it will cost.
They’ve been installing in Lincoln for several months now but there is still no information about which ISP’s will use their infrastructure.
What happens if no ISP’s take interest, what happens then? Do they hand the infrastructure over to openreach?
We’ve also got Fibre Me Ltd doing alot of work around Lincoln, although I believe they are now known as Upp Broadband.
On their website, they cannot even spell Mablethorpe correctly.
Lincoln and Louth have already got FTTP or Virgin Media choices which is really annoying, I wish Altnets would try other areas without any choice first, as I’m sure uptake would be greater.
