BT UK Trial Boosts 5G Standalone Upload Speeds to 230Mbps+

Telecoms giant BT (EE) and network supplier Nokia claim to have pushed mobile broadband upload speeds to over 230Mbps on a new trial network, which operated by harnessing the uplink aggregation of two carrier components in live spectrum for a 5G Standalone (SA) network.

Combining multiple radio bands together to boost mobile data speeds and coverage is nothing new, with Carrier Aggregation (CA) – also known as Carrier Components (CC) – technology being a common feature on 4G networks. The same capability also exists for 5G and operators are slowly starting to harness this, often as part of upgrades toward a true end-to-end 5G Standalone (SA) network (these remove reliance on existing 4G networks).

A year ago BT and Nokia became one of the first European mobile operators to aggregate four downlink (download) channels of radio spectrum in a live 5G SA network (here) – adopting 4CC across four low-band and mid-band radio channels (2.1GHz, 2.6GHz, 3.4GHz and 3.6 GHz). The latest trial does something similar for the uplink side, using both 2CC CA uplink and 4CC CA downlink simultaneously.

The tests were conducted at BT Group’s facility in Adastral Park, UK, using Nokia’s 5G AirScale kit and a device powered by a Snapdragon® 5G Modem-RF System from Qualcomm, following initial lab-based trials. Speeds of over 230Mbps in the uplink were reached – including the wider 5G FDD carrier at 40MHz in 2.6GHz – as well as over 1Gbps in the downlink.

The demonstration was conducted with 15, 30 and 40MHz NR2600 (2.6GHz band) carrier independently aggregated with a 40MHz NR3500 (3.5GHz band) carrier component. BT claims this trial also means they’re the “first in Europe” to achieve both 2CC CA uplink and 4CC CA downlink simultaneously.

Greg McCall, BT’s Chief Networks Officer, said:

“Carrier aggregation will be key to delivering the very best 5G experience to our customers, with this latest trial in partnership with Nokia demonstrating significant performance increases in terms of uplink speeds. This builds on last year’s success of achieving 4CA in 5G SA downlink, and we look forward to achieving further milestones in this space as we continue to progress towards 5G SA.”

BT clearly sees the adoption of 5G SA networks as being one way for EE to “maintains its unbeatable 5G network for customers,” although at present Three UK tends to be the operator that delivers the fastest 5G mobile download speeds in most studies (examples here and here). But crucially, Three UK itself hasn’t really done much on the 5G SA front, although that will change if their merger with Vodafone is approved by regulators.

We note that the “unbeatable 5G” claim used above is attributed to a recent report from RootMetrics (here), but its awards were largely based on the combined performance of 4G and 5G connectivity. Not to mention that they only really focus on urban connectivity, didn’t touch on upload speeds and merely noted that all the 5G capable operators delivered sub-60ms latency (this isn’t expected to change until 5G SA becomes more common).

The same RootMetrics report also noted that Three UK was the fastest 5G mobile operator with median downloads of 202.2Mbps – compared to EE’s 144.6Mbps, Vodafone’s 131.5Mbps, and O2’s (VMO2) 75.1Mbps.

Good to see them testing this. My local EE mast used to have upload carrier aggregation on 4G but lost this when they swapped from Huawei equipment to Nokia.

This doesn’t seem to be very big news, as the numbers are still quite low.

I have seen mobile speed tests in the States of over 3 Gbps using CA on higher bands.

500 Mbps to 1.2 Gbps seems pretty common with FWA equipment these days, which is a lot less expensive to deploy.

If put into the proper context, then it is a key development for a European operator. The speeds you see in the USA stem from the fact that, in dense urban areas, operators have been able to deploy mmW bands with a lot of spare spectrum frequency. But that is not the same as the mid-band spectrum being used above, which is better for coverage, but only has small bits of spectrum to spare for data.

So sad as U.S.O. provider copping out of actually providing U.S.O. connection by offering 4g Capped at 15Mbs (within the U.S.O. price) then boasting about how fast they can go. BT should honestly be hauled over the coals.

“put into the proper context, then it is a key development for a European operator.” Really? I could quite easily get 850Mbps+ in Germany.

      On upload?

What would be the best network for 4g while I don’t have access to 5g

EE as I can get upto over 400 mbps via EEs 4G+ download speeds via ca

the speeds in the UK are fake, they are the worst and expensive, they rip you off in other countries in Europe they have speeds over 1 Gbps and in business they have 10 Gbps, an example Romania with 5€ per month and business they barely pay 40€ all inclusive

What are you talking about? Read the article.

and what’s that as a proportion of the Romanian average income

When compared to equivalent countries (income / cost of doing business), the UK is not doing too badly. The 4G/5G speeds I received while doing a bit of interrailing are not tremendously different. The only thing I did find mind blowing was full mobile coverage when on the subway systems – London still hasn’t managed that, though it might finally do so next year.

It’s a shame I can’t connect to Xbox live properly and make use of my unlimited data .
Perhaps they should focus on fixing the NAT problems first.

    Is this news for real?

I had to drop bt and ee because they were still providing to me “fast and reliable broadband” at 75 mb in zone 1 in LONDON, AT THE fair price of 42 pounds per month..
And If I ask to BT about fibre, they answer to Mr, it will come soon..v
But hyperoptic can come in and install it tomorrow..
EE, the best mobile company in UK for 9 years in a row, has CAPPED all their 4g and 5g at max 100mb/s unless you pay the highest range price, this from April without advising anyone…
In the meanwhile THREE has sent to me a 5g home broadband which goes at 150mb/s and 5G from THREE mobile, goes at the insane speed of 500mb/s in elephant and Castle..

The person who did this news is evidently paid by bt and ee..

    1. Avatar photo Bill says:

Plus the sneaky 600gb fup in place not true unlimited then if they cap your speeds once’s you go over 600gb to a crawl ect

  9. Avatar photo Raj says:

They speed cap their tariffs anyway so what’s the point?
