The state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire (SNY) project, which with the help of BT seeks to make superfast broadband ISP services available to 100% of local homes and businesses by 2017 (90% by the end of 2014), has revealed that over 24,000 premises in 34 communities will be included in the first stages.

BT Wholesale’s latest price list update reveals that the operators forthcoming and “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband ISP service, which will be available to FTTC capable UK lines from spring 2013, could attract Excess Construction Charges (ECC) of over £3,000.

The boss of telecoms analyst firm Point Topic, Oliver Johnson, has warned that blowing true fibre optic lines (FTTH / P) along the streets and across the fields of Europe and the United Kingdom is ultimately “super-expensive” and thus no longer the “first choice” when it comes to building new superfast broadband networks.

Communications equipment provider Calix has helped two small farming villages in the heart of rural England, Overbury and Conderton (Cotswolds), gain access to “ultra-fast” fibre optic broadband (FTTP) services by deploying its E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP).

National UK telecoms operator BT has today announced a final list of 99 telephone exchanges that will soon be able to receive its latest 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) or “ultra-fast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband ISP products through their commercial roll-out.

The £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which aims to roll-out fibre optic based broadband (FTTC etc.) ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has achieved a “major milestone” after it became available to around 125,000 Cornish premises (i.e. 50% coverage).

The Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) confirms that BT has been picked as the “preferred supplier” to help every household in the county gain access to a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP connection by March 2017 (note: 90% coverage for speeds of 25Mbps+ is set for 2015).

BT has unsurprisingly been chosen by the joint Cambridgeshire and Peterborough project in England (UK) to help make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of local premises by 2015 (note: “very nearly” 100% will also get speeds of at least 2Mbps by the same date).

BTOpenreach has today started a four-week long technical trial for its new 220Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP product, which will be available from telephone exchanges in Bradwell Abbey, Chester South, Exeter and York (England).

Zen Internet has today launched a new symmetric 10Mbps (Megabits per second) capable NGA Ethernet service for businesses in the United Kingdom. The new product is based off two of the latest Next Generation Access (NGA) technologies, Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).

The South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) have today become the latest to sign a new £35.6m contract with BT that will make superfast broadband ISP speeds (25Mbps+) available to 94% of local homes and businesses by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

The joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) scheme in England has finally signed a £94m contract with BT that will make “high-speed fibre broadband” ISP services available to “around” 90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2016.

BTOpenreach confirms that homes and businesses in the rural village of Deddington (Oxfordshire, England) can now choose to connect via the first UK Fibre-Only Exchange (FOX) trial, which aims to replace the old copper line products with “ultra-fast” fibre optic phone and broadband (FTTP) services.

The FTTH Council Europe, which champions adoption of true Fibre-to-the-Home based fibre optic broadband ISP connections, has revealed that FTTH services passed 199,000 homes in the United Kingdom during December 2012 (up from 175k a few months earlier) with a take-up rate of about 8.5%.

Rural homes and businesses in western Kent (England) look set to benefit after two ISPs, Gigaclear and Call Flow Solutions, confirmed that they were separately aiming to improve broadband internet services to a number of overlapping local villages surrounding the town of Sevenoaks. A mix of wireless and fibre solutions will be used.

The boss of Zen Internet, Richard Tang, has said that the ISP expects a boom in demand for superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services over the coming years and plans to invest £4 million on a related network upgrade during 2013. Tang suggests that the effort could deliver a huge surge in its revenues.

BT has warned Dido Harding, the boss of its arch rival TalkTalk, that her ISP is in danger of being “remembered as broadband luddites clinging to a copper raft in a sea of fibre” after Harding criticised the lack of competition and regulation in the United Kingdom’s emerging market for fibre optic based superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services.
